HOSTED BUSINESS WEBSITE

Wix: check the business feature, not only the page

Wix hosts the site and supplies business features on different tiers. Its current plan table distinguishes basic sites from plans with payments and scheduling. Check whether the exact booking, collaborator and storage needs fit; do not treat an app listing as proof that its paid features are included.

Rule it out if external hosting is mandatory. Wix states that the complete site relies on its infrastructure. Keeping the domain at another registrar does not make the Wix application portable. Official hosting and export boundary.

Prototype: create a service page and one inquiry or booking path using test details. Check the confirmation, staff recipient and editing permissions—not just the page appearance.

HOSTED PRESENTATION WEBSITE

Squarespace: test the portfolio and the migration limit

Compare its visual editor for a contained site with strong imagery and a manageable set of pages. The plan comparison separates contributor allowances, code injection and transaction fees; verify those against the actual workflow. A website subscription is not proof that every adjacent service is included.

Rule it out if complete design portability is essential. Its WordPress-format export includes selected content, but omits portfolio pages, style settings and several block types. Export requires an active, published site, so a trial alone cannot prove that exit path. Official export limits.

Prototype: build a real case study with your longest title, image captions and a contact route. Test the mobile order and how a second editor updates it without changing the layout.

DESIGNER-LED CMS WEBSITE

Webflow: separate Site, Workspace and exported code

A CMS Collection can hold repeatable case studies or articles while a shared template defines their presentation. Basic Site plans exclude CMS; current Premium covers CMS use. A Site plan publishes a hosted site to a custom domain. Standard Workspace features and hosting are priced separately; legacy accounts and bundled Team plans need their own quote. May 2026 plan changes.

Rule it out if a static export must preserve the whole application. Paid Workspace code export is not a working copy of the hosted CMS, checkout, forms or search. Exporting Collection data separately still leaves systems to rebuild. Official code-export boundary.

Prototype: define a case-study Collection and enter three different items. Test a missing image, a long title and the editor's actual permissions before designing dozens of pages.

SELF-HOSTED CONTENT SYSTEM

WordPress.org: choose control with an accountable operator

WordPress supports scheduled posts, revisions, contributor roles and custom content types. Themes and plugins extend it, but that flexibility also adds choices to maintain. This comparison means the WordPress.org software on hosting you arrange, not a WordPress.com plan.

Rule it out if nobody owns maintenance or a managed service budget. A recovery plan needs the database and relevant files, not just an article export. Decide who handles updates, plugin compatibility, security and a restore test. Official WordPress backup guidance.

Prototype: have a contributor draft, an editor revise and an authorized publisher release a test item. Restore a backup to a separate test environment and verify media and links before relying on it.

Editing and content

Use the longest realistic title, optional fields and real-sized images. Can the intended editor publish a new item without adjusting every layout? Test draft, revision and publishing access.

Forms and mobile use

Use test data to submit the main inquiry path. Check validation, success feedback, delivery and keyboard focus. Review navigation and image order on a narrow screen.

Findability and ownership

Confirm control of URLs, titles, indexing and redirects where needed. Keep the domain in an account the business controls. Export or back up a small sample where the plan permits, then inspect the files.

Pass condition: the operator can update the real content, the visitor can complete the main action, the required tier is priced, and migration or recovery limits are accepted. These are suggested acceptance checks, not tests ToolMerit claims to have run inside the four products.
