PRIVATE MP3 → MP3 COMPRESSION
Make an MP3 smaller.
Know what you traded.
Choose a bitrate or enter the size your file must fit. ToolMerit estimates the result, compresses the MP3 inside this browser, and gives you an A/B listen before download.
Choose an MP3THE COMPRESSION DESK
Set a useful limit—not a mystery percentage.
An MP3 is already lossy. This tool decodes and encodes it again at a lower rate; it cannot restore missing detail, and choosing a higher output rate does not improve the source.
Add the MP3 you need to shrink
Listen before keeping it
The measured output and an A/B player will appear here.
The encoder loads only after you start.
Choose an MP3 to begin.
Your source, decoded audio, tags, and compressed result stay in this browser tab. ToolMerit does not receive the file.
If you still have a WAV, FLAC, or project master, make the smaller MP3 from that source. Recompressing an MP3 adds another lossy generation.
BITRATE IS THE REAL SIZE CONTROL
Match the rate to the material.
At constant or average bitrate, duration × bitrate gives a useful size estimate. Channel choice and metadata can move the measured result; listening decides whether the trade is acceptable.
Hard size limit
Short spoken notes, accessibility narration, or reference audio where intelligibility matters more than tone.
Speech delivery
Interviews, meetings, and podcasts. Check sibilance, room tone, and music beds before sending.
General listening
A practical band for mixed audio and music drafts when file size still matters.
Detail over savings
Use only when the source warrants it. A 128 kbps source cannot recover detail by being re-encoded at 320.
TARGET-SIZE MODE
The math is simple.
The quality decision is not.
The tool reserves a small margin for MP3 headers and tags, then clamps the request to 32–320 kbps. If the required rate is too low, trim the recording or accept a larger file.
DO NOT UPSCALE A LOSSY SOURCE
A bigger MP3 can still be worse.
MP3-to-MP3 conversion first decodes the existing stream, then encodes those samples again. Stay below the estimated source rate when the goal is compression. If your chosen result is not smaller, keep the original.
CHOOSE BY DESTINATION
Test the constraint that actually matters.
Platform limits change, so enter the current limit yourself instead of trusting a hard-coded preset. Leave margin for message text, artwork, or other attachments.
Use target size
Enter a value below the published upload cap, then confirm the measured file—not the estimate—fits.
Try mono at 64–96 kbps
Center speech often survives mono efficiently. Preserve stereo when separate channels carry different speakers or ambience.
Start at 160–192 kbps
Listen to cymbals, reverberation, dense choruses, and stereo width. Raise the rate if artifacts distract.
Measure loading and support
Keep filenames stable, test seeking, and retain a source master for future formats or accessibility edits.
A/B CHECK
Listen to the hardest 20 seconds.
Do not judge only the quiet introduction. Compare a dense or exposed passage at matched volume, ideally with headphones.
- 01Find sibilants, cymbals, applause, reverb tails, or background noise.
- 02Switch between source and output without changing the player volume.
- 03If artifacts matter, raise bitrate; if the file misses the cap, trim or accept mono.
- 04Download only after the measured size and playback both pass.
MP3 COMPRESSION ANSWERS
What this tool changes.
Can MP3 compression be lossless?+
Not when the audio is re-encoded at a lower MP3 bitrate. Keep the original if you need an unchanged copy. ZIP-style compression usually saves little on an already compressed MP3.
Will a target size be exact?+
No. The duration-based bitrate calculation is an estimate, and headers or tags add bytes. ToolMerit measures the completed file so you can verify it before download.
Does lowering sample rate always help?+
Not necessarily. This focused tool lets the encoder manage the MP3 stream and exposes the controls that most directly affect delivery size: bitrate, duration, and channels.
Are my ID3 tags preserved?+
The “copy compatible tags” option asks FFmpeg to map global metadata into a new ID3v2 MP3. Attached artwork and uncommon private frames may not survive; keep the source if metadata completeness matters.
Can I compress several MP3s at once?+
This page handles one file so you can listen and verify each result. For a library-scale workflow, use native FFmpeg or a desktop batch encoder.
What if the result is larger?+
Keep the original. The chosen rate may exceed the source average, or metadata and container overhead may dominate a very short clip.
THE RIGHT NEXT ROUTE
Compress, convert, or keep the source.
Local encoding uses the self-hosted FFmpeg.wasm wrapper and FFmpeg’s libmp3lame interface.
