PRIVATE CONTAINER CONVERSION

Change the wrapper.
Touch the streams only when needed.

Turn one MKV into MP4 locally. Try a fast stream copy first, or explicitly encode H.264/AAC when the destination needs a compatibility copy.

Stream copy preserves compatible packets. Encoding creates a new lossy generation.

TWO HONEST PATHS

Remux first—or choose to encode.

MKV and MP4 are containers. The codecs inside decide whether a no-quality-loss stream copy can work.

LOCAL

The MKV and MP4 stay in this tab. ToolMerit does not receive the video.

PRESERVATION RULE

Keep the MKV when it contains alternate audio, styled subtitles, chapters, attachments, or archival codecs. This browser tool intentionally outputs the first video and first audio only.

REMUX VS ENCODE

The operation determines quality and time.

Changing containers does not inherently require recompressing. Codec compatibility and the destination decide.

WHAT THIS OUTPUT LEAVES BEHIND

Container conversion is also a stream-selection decision.

KEPT

First video + first audio

A focused, predictable playback copy for common web, phone, TV, and editor handoffs.

DROPPED

Extra languages + subtitles

Alternate tracks, SRT/ASS subtitles, chapters, fonts, cover art, and attachments remain in the MKV.

VERIFY

Picture, sound, duration, seek

Preview the output and jump near the end. A valid MP4 container does not guarantee every destination supports its codec.

MKV TO MP4 ANSWERS

Before you delete anything.

Can MKV to MP4 be lossless?+

At the compressed-stream level, yes—when the selected video and audio codecs can be copied into MP4. Only the container is rewritten. Encoding H.264/AAC is a lossy new generation.

Why can stream copy fail?+

MKV can hold streams that the MP4 muxer or destination does not accept, such as some audio codecs or subtitle formats. Switch to explicit compatibility encoding only if a lossy copy is acceptable.

Will subtitles survive?+

No. This focused output excludes subtitle and attachment streams. Keep the MKV, or use desktop FFmpeg/HandBrake to convert or burn the intended subtitle track deliberately.

Will MP4 be smaller?+

Stream copy is usually similar in size because the compressed packets are unchanged. Encoding size depends on content, CRF, audio bitrate, and encoder behavior.

Is the MKV uploaded?+

No. A self-hosted FFmpeg WebAssembly engine works inside this browser tab.
