Protect the full subject
Use Fit when a logo, portrait, or product must remain complete. Wide and tall files receive transparent or colored space so nothing is cut off.
Tradeoff: the subject appears smaller.Independent software guidance for creators and small teams.
FREE • PRIVATE • MULTI-SIZE
Turn one JPG or JPEG into a real multi-resolution icon file. Choose the sizes, control the square crop, preview every frame, and download the ICO—without sending your image to ToolMerit.
Choose a JPEG →JPEG TO ICO CONVERTER
The converter decodes, resizes, and packages your image inside this browser tab. Start with a clear subject; details that look fine at photo size can disappear at 16 pixels.
Your icon previews will appear here.
Local conversion. File selection, resizing, preview, and ICO assembly happen on your device. The tool does not upload or retain the image.
THE 16-PIXEL TEST
Icons have less room for texture, text, and background detail. Before downloading, inspect the smallest preview—not just the 256 px frame.
TWO DECISIONS THAT MATTER
Use Fit when a logo, portrait, or product must remain complete. Wide and tall files receive transparent or colored space so nothing is cut off.
Tradeoff: the subject appears smaller.Use Fill when the important detail sits near the center. The converter crops the source evenly to cover the square without stretching it.
Tradeoff: edge content may be removed.Windows can choose an exact-size frame instead of scaling one large image for every context. The downloaded file contains each size you select.
Default: 16, 32, 48, and 256 px.WHAT THE DOWNLOAD CONTAINS
An ICO is a container, not merely a renamed JPEG. ToolMerit writes an icon directory and embeds the selected square images behind it.
Read Microsoft’s current icon-size guidance →Records how many frames are available and where each one begins.
Sizes below 256 px use 32-bit icon bitmap data, including an alpha channel.
The largest selected frame is PNG-compressed to keep a high-resolution icon practical.
USE THE RIGHT OUTPUT
A multi-size ICO lets Windows select a suitable frame for different interface locations and display scales. Keep the 256 px frame for high-density views.
Use the ICO as /favicon.ico when you need the traditional fallback. Modern sites commonly provide PNG and other favicon assets alongside it.
Those platforms use different asset sets and formats. Do not treat one ICO as a complete cross-platform app-icon package.
IF THE ICON LOOKS WRONG
Remove small text and background detail. Crop to one recognizable object or use a simpler brand mark.
Switch from Fit to Fill, or crop the JPEG before conversion so the important detail occupies more of the square.
Choose Fit whole image. If transparent padding creates an unwanted halo, select a background color that matches the source.
JPEG has no alpha channel. The tool can make added padding transparent, but it cannot automatically remove the JPEG’s original background.
Confirm that the file is actually JPEG data, not another format renamed with a .jpg extension. Re-exporting it as JPEG often resolves malformed files.
Windows and browsers may retain old icons. Rename the file, refresh the relevant cache, or restart the application before judging the new result.
JPEG TO ICO FAQ
The converter has a narrow job: make a usable, multi-frame ICO from one JPEG without a server upload.
Yes. The .jpg and .jpeg extensions normally identify the same JPEG image format. The tool checks the file’s actual browser-readable image data as well as its extension.
No. Conversion resizes the pixels already in the JPEG; it cannot restore detail lost to compression or a small source. Start with a clean image at least 256 × 256 px when possible.
Yes. That is the default here. Select any combination from 16 through 256 px, and the converter packages those frames into one downloadable file.
Only newly added padding can be transparent. The original JPEG background stays opaque because JPEG does not contain transparency data.
No. JavaScript in your browser reads the selected file, draws the resized frames, and assembles the ICO. The source and result are not sent to ToolMerit.
Microsoft’s icon guidance recommends compressing the 256 × 256 frame. Smaller frames are stored as 32-bit icon bitmap data for broad compatibility, while the largest frame uses PNG compression.
