CHOOSE THE SOURCE, THEN THE ASSISTANT

AI research tools for web, documents, and papers

Consider Perplexity Research for a web investigation, Gemini Notebook for a selected source collection, or Elicit for paper-centered evidence work. Start with the material you need to understand—not a promise that one assistant knows everything.

Compare the three starting points ↓

YOUR RESEARCH STARTING POINT

WEB DISCOVERY

Start with Perplexity Research

Use a scoped question to build a source trail. Open the evidence behind each important conclusion before using it in a brief.

SELECTED MATERIAL

Start with Gemini Notebook

Use a deliberate source collection when your question must be answered against particular documents. Inspect what the import actually contains.

PAPER EVIDENCE

Start with Elicit

Use paper-centered research when study methods and findings matter. Check the full text and compare like-for-like evidence.

WHAT CHANGES THE CHOICE

Compare the source boundary and useful output

The capabilities overlap. These are three practical starting points, not exclusive product categories or an exhaustive market ranking. Keep the final deliverable in mind: a web brief, a source-grounded answer, or a paper evidence table.

FIT, ACCESS, AND A SMALL TRIAL

Where each research tool fits—and where to be careful

DISCOVER AND FOLLOW UP

Perplexity Research: investigate a web question

Our starting choice when a marketer needs to explore a topic before deciding which sources deserve close reading. Select Research in the mode picker; the documented workflow produces a report that can be exported to PDF or a document.

Access: the official mode guide describes limited free access and extended Pro access. Research chooses its model combination automatically; it is not a manual model-comparison interface.

Proposed trial: ask which official documents explain a specific product feature as of a stated date. Open three consequential claims, find the actual supporting passage, and note any unsupported inference. This is our suggested evaluation task, not a test result.

Skip it as the final authority: a fluent report is not enough for a current price, quotation, or consequential factual claim. Preserve the original link and the condition attached to the answer.

READ A DELIBERATE COLLECTION

Gemini Notebook: work from selected sources

Google's current documentation uses the name Gemini Notebook; readers may also know it as NotebookLM. Our starting choice when the brief must stay anchored to a defined document set rather than a broad web overview.

Source behavior: Google's import guide says Drive sources auto-update, while permissions still govern access. Do not assume every uploaded or imported source shares the same update behavior. Free accounts have source limits; check the current account allowance before building a large collection.

Proposed trial: select two permitted documents that disagree on one detail. Ask for each document's position separately, then inspect the passage in both originals. A merged answer should preserve disagreement, not quietly choose a winner.

Disqualifier: if a crucial detail is missing from the imported representation, add a supported original source or review it separately. A source-grounded answer cannot replace information it never received.

EXAMINE STUDY-LEVEL EVIDENCE

Elicit: organize paper-based research

Our starting choice when an evidence-backed article needs to compare studies rather than collect general web commentary. Elicit also offers broader research workflows; this recommendation focuses on its paper-centered use case.

Access and export: a Basic free plan is available. Its export guide distinguishes report downloads from tables: PDF/Word Research Reports are available across plans, while Find Papers/Paper Chat table exports require Plus or higher. Systematic Review table exports require Pro or higher.

Proposed trial: find studies for one narrow question and compare the population, method, measured outcome, and limitation. Trace each important extracted field to the full paper. A blank or uncertain field is preferable to an invented answer.

Disqualifier: do not pool unlike measures or present a paper list as expert consensus. For a high-stakes health or policy conclusion, obtain the domain review the claim requires.

A WORKED VERIFICATION EXAMPLE

Check what an imported webpage actually contains

Suppose a software comparison depends on a chart embedded in a webpage. Can importing the page's URL into Gemini Notebook be treated as importing that chart? The following is a documentation-based example, not a hands-on import test.

Claim → documented boundary → editorial action
  1. 01 · CLAIM TO CHECK“Importing the URL captures the whole page.”

This is the assumption under review, not a claim we endorse.

  2. 02 · SOURCE BOUNDARYAn HTML import is not the complete visual page.

Google says HTML URL imports take text, not images, embedded video, or nested pages. URL-linked PDFs are treated as PDF sources. Check the import specification.

  3. 03 · PUBLISHING DECISIONVerify the chart in its original context.

Do not claim the assistant inspected it. Read the chart and its labels yourself, or supply a supported original asset, then verify the resulting answer.

Keep a claim record, not just a saved answer

For each important claim, record the proposed wording, original source, relevant passage or figure, date checked, scope, and reviewer decision. Mark it supported, needs qualification, or not established. Those are editorial outcomes, not automatic accuracy scores.

Compare research cost by accepted evidence

During a small trial, record the subscription or usage cost, verification time, usable findings, corrections, and export restrictions. An inexpensive report that takes longer to verify may not save work. Do not compare a report quota with a paper-search quota as if they measure the same output.

How we selected these research workflows

ToolMerit chose three candidates to cover different source-selection jobs for creators and small teams. Product capabilities and plan distinctions above come from the linked official pages, checked on September 8, 2026. Fit recommendations, proposed trials, and verification criteria are our editorial analysis. We have not completed a cross-vendor benchmark or assigned accuracy, speed, or performance scores.

This is not an exhaustive list and the tools overlap. Test the workflow you actually need before subscribing; check current allowances and exports in the provider's account. When the evidence is ready, explore AI writing workflows for turning sources into a draft, or return to all AI tool categories. Read our review method or send a correction.
