PRIVATE VIDEO → AUDIO EXTRACTION
Take the sound out of MP4.
Keep its packets when you can.
Extract the first audio track into M4A locally. Try a fast stream copy for compatible AAC or ALAC, or deliberately encode AAC when you need a different rate or channel layout.
Choose an MP4COPY OR ENCODE—YOUR CHOICE
Make the quality decision visible.
Stream copy is fast and lossless at the audio-packet level, but only when the source codec fits M4A. AAC encode is slower and lossy, but it can make a compatible delivery file and change bitrate or channels.

The local encoder loads only after you start.
audio.m4a
Choose an MP4 to begin.
The MP4, selected audio stream, and M4A remain in this tab. ToolMerit does not receive the media.
If the MP4 already contains AAC or ALAC that the M4A container accepts, stream copy preserves those exact compressed audio packets. Changing bitrate, sample rate, or channels requires decoding and encoding.
TWO PIPELINES
Same extension. Different audio history.
The result panel reports which route actually ran. This tool never silently falls back from copy to encode.
CHOOSE BY NEXT STEP
M4A is a delivery container—not an editing master.
Copy first
Keep the existing track when the service accepts M4A. Re-encode only when its input requirements demand it.
Preserve, then edit
A copied AAC track avoids another generation before editing. For heavy processing, consider extracting a WAV working file.
Encode deliberately
Mono at 96–128 kbps can reduce centered speech, but listen for artifacts and retain the MP4 source.
Keep the MP4
M4A contains only selected audio. It does not preserve video, other audio tracks, subtitles, chapters, or the complete source context.
FIRST AUDIO TRACK ONLY

This focused page maps 0:a:0. A multilingual video may place commentary, description, or another language on later tracks.
- 01Play the MP4 and confirm the audible language/content before extraction.
- 02If the wrong track appears, inspect streams in a desktop media tool or native FFmpeg.
- 03Do not assume the largest, default, or first track is always the desired one.
- 04Keep the source until the M4A duration and content are verified.
MP4 TO M4A ANSWERS
What conversion does—and does not—mean.
Is MP4 to M4A lossless?+
Stream copy is lossless at the packet level when the source audio codec is compatible. AAC encode is lossy. The result panel identifies the method.
Why can stream copy fail?+
The MP4 may have no audio, an unsupported or damaged stream, or a codec/configuration the M4A muxer cannot accept. Switch to AAC encode only if re-encoding is acceptable.
Does M4A contain video?+
No. This output contains the selected audio stream only. The original MP4 remains unchanged on your device.
Will 320 kbps improve low-bitrate source audio?+
No. A higher AAC output rate cannot restore information already missing; it can only create a larger new encode.
Does ToolMerit upload the video?+
No. FFmpeg.wasm reads and writes the media in this browser tab. Large files still require local memory, so close other heavy tabs if needed.
