THE CALCULATOR

Calculate bill shares and who should pay whom.

Use equal shares for a simple split. Change a person’s share weight to 2 when they owe twice a standard share, or use decimal weights for a custom proportion.

1. Bill

2. People and payments

“Paid” is what the person already contributed toward the group bill.

WHAT THE NUMBERS MEAN

A fair share and a settlement are different calculations.

01 · BILL TOTAL

Subtotal + tax + tip + other fee

Percent tax and tip are calculated from the subtotal in this tool.
02 · PERSON’S SHARE

Total × person’s weight ÷ all weights

Rounding differences are assigned by cents so all shares add back to the exact total.
03 · BALANCE

Fair share − amount already paid

A positive balance means the person owes; a negative balance means they should receive.

THREE USEFUL MODES

Equal is only one kind of fair.

1 / 1 / 1

Equal split

Give every participant weight 1. The bill is divided evenly, then actual payments determine who reimburses whom.

1 / 2 / 1

Weighted split

A weight of 2 owes twice a weight of 1. This works for rooms, family shares, longer stays, or any agreed proportion.

PAID ≠ OWED

One person fronted the bill

Record the full card payment under that person. The settlement plan directs the others’ balances back to the payer.

CALCULATOR BOUNDARIES

Agree on the rule before trusting the result.

  • Tax and tip basis: this calculator applies percentage tax and tip to the subtotal, not to each other.
  • Individual items: convert item totals into weights or agree on each person’s target proportion; this is not an item-by-item receipt scanner.
  • Rounding: the calculator preserves the final bill total, so a few people may differ by one smallest currency unit.
  • Payments: results are a planning summary only. Confirm names and amounts before sending money in any payment app.

SPLIT PAYMENT CALCULATOR FAQ

Common bill-splitting questions.

How do I split a payment online?+

Enter the subtotal, tax, tip, and fee. Add each person with an equal or custom share weight, then enter what each already paid. The calculator shows fair shares and the smallest practical transfer plan. It does not move money.

How do I split a bill when one person paid?+

Enter the full bill in that person’s “Already paid” field and zero for everyone else. With equal weights, each other person will owe their share to the payer.

How do weighted shares work?+

Weights are proportions. With weights 1, 2, and 1, the middle person owes half the total and the other two owe one quarter each.

Why do two shares differ by one cent?+

Some totals cannot divide evenly. The calculator allocates the remaining cents while ensuring that all displayed shares equal the exact bill total.
